In 1984, the Super-Twisted Nematic (STN) technology was patented – a milestone in the history of LCD development. In a personal video, Dieter Heimgartner, co-inventor of the STN patent and founder of DMB Technics AG, reflects on the origins of this groundbreaking innovation and explains how it laid the foundation for a company with a clear technological focus.

The STN technology enabled, for the first time, the efficient control of high-resolution graphic LCDs – paving the way for a wide range of applications in industry, communications, and consumer electronics.

In our anniversary video, our Board Chairman and company founder Dieter Heimgartner shares personal insights into this formative period. He recounts how, as a young physics lab technician at BBC, he first came into contact with LCD technology, how early experiments in a research lab evolved into an international development project – and how this ultimately led to the STN patent.

He offers deep technical insight into how increasing the twist angle of the liquid crystals allowed for more precise control – a breakthrough that enabled the creation of graphic displays with higher information density. He also highlights the broader impact of the STN technology on the electronics industry of the time – and how it ultimately inspired the founding of DMB Technics.

Today, we stand for custom display and HMI-Solutions that go far beyond what was technically possible back then. Whether it’s industrial user interfaces, integrated touch solutions, or intelligent control systems – we combine technical expertise with industry insight, a strong understanding of the value chain, and a clear commitment to quality.

Our teams not only bring technical know-how, but also a deep understanding of applications, markets, and production processes. As experts in tailor-made display and HMI technologies, we support our customers from initial concept to series production – solution-driven, collaborative, and with the highest standards in functionality, design, and reliability.

InsideDMB offers real insights into who we are – our history, our mindset, and the people who work every day to get the most out of every display solution.
